MOBILE, Ala. — An Alabama school system is looking into a complaint from a parent about a test she says was given to her son that was “racist.”

Erica Hall told WALA her son, who is in eighth grade at Burns Middle School, took a picture of the test with his cell phone.

The test, which Hall said was given to the entire class, had 10 math problems that she said were clearly offensive.

Hall went to the school on Tuesday morning to talk to the principal about the test, WALA reports.

WALA contacted the Mobile County Public School System about the alleged test. School System Communication Director Rena Phillips told the station she just found about the allegation.

Phillips said she turned a copy of the test over to the superintendent, who she said would look into it.

According to, versions of the test — called “The L.A. Math Test” — have been online for several years and some teachers have gotten in trouble for using it in class.
