ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. —The man and woman killed in a plane crash on High Rock Lake on Friday afternoon have been identified.

Steve Bown and Karyn Martin were killed after a Cessna Columbia crashed near Goat Island on the Rowan County side of the lake around 1:45 p.m.

Divers recovered Bown’s body underwater around 11:17 a.m. Saturday and brought it to the surface.

Bown was president of Performance Springs Inc., a company based out of New Hudson, Mich. that specializes in valve springs for engines.

Officials said he had been in Davidson County on racing business. His company had ties to NASCAR.

The single-engine plane left the Davidson County airport around 1:15 p.m. Friday, heading for Florida. It crashed shortly after taking off. The plane’s landing gear was reportedly still down.

Officials have not confirmed the ages of the victims.
