IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Officials said 22 people have been taken to the hospital and three were seriously injured after the roof of a walkway collapsed at a high school in Iredell County.

Authorities said it happened after a truck hit an outside structure at North Iredell High School at about 3 p.m. Saturday during a regional band competition.

Twenty-one of the people taken to the hospital were students and one was an adult, according to officials. Names have not been released.

It happened as a delivery van hit a structural beam at the front entrance of the school. The roof of a covered walkway then fell on top of people in attendance.

The incident happened at a regional band competition. Only four schools showed up to compete and eight others cancelled because of weather.

Information on why the driver hit the structural beam has not been released.
