Riverkeeper: Duke Energy allowing toxic leaks into Catawba River

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Catawba Riverkeeper and Southern Environmental Law Center are reportedly planning to sue Duke Energy for violating the Clean Water Act.

According to WBTV, the groups allege the energy giant’s coal ash lagoons have leaked into Mountain Island Lake at unsafe levels.

WBTV reports the lake is a source of drinking water for Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

The Riverkeeper monitors multiple sites near the coal ponds, WBTV reports.  Duke Energy has a coal-fired power plant on the lake.
