RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Raleigh Police Chief Harry Patrick Dolan will step down later this year.

Dolan has been chief of police for nearly five years. He plans to leave the post Oct. 1.

Dolan came to Raleigh from Grand Rapids, Mich. He has been in law enforcement for 32 years.

Deputy Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown will serve as interim chief while the city conducts a search for a permanent replacement.

Mayor Nancy McFarlane on Wednesday praised Dolan’s community policing initiative for increasing the contact with young people and providing more opportunities for community outreach.
