Raleigh officer shot during standoff, residents evacuated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh Police said one of their officers was shot during a standoff Monday, and dozens of residents in nearby apartment buildings have been evacuated.

The shooting happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. at the suspect’s apartment just north of RDU International Airport.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to the hospital. A police spokesman at the scene told WTVD the officer is stable.

Police said they received a call shortly before 11 a.m. that a man was threatening suicide and could also harm others. Officers tracked down the man at his apartment.

A SWAT team tried to enter the apartment around 7:30 p.m., but the suspect fired several shots and the officer was hit, police said.

Police have not released the suspect’s name.

WTVD reported the standoff was ongoing as of 10 p.m. Monday.
