RALEIGH N.C. — A grand jury has indicted a detention officer in the death of an inmate at the Wake County Detention Center, according to WTVD.

WTVD reports Markeith Council is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of 40-year-old Shon McClain of Apex.

Investigators say Council got into a fight with McClain on June 4. McClain suffered “severe head injuries” as a result of the fight, WTVD reports. He later died at WakeMed Hospital.

An autopsy indicated McClain died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck.

Council had been on paid administrative duty pending the SBI’s review, however the officer is now suspended without pay.
