JAMESTOWN, N.C. -- Ragsdale High School Assistant Principal Jean Ransom was one of the people who died in a head-on crash Tuesday night.

The collision happened on U.S. 70 late Tuesday night, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

At about 11:50 p.m., troopers responded to the crash near N.C. 61 and the town of Whitsett in Guilford County.

Troopers said Gregory Jason Pitti, 32, of Gibsonville, was driving west on U.S. 70 when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with Ransom's vehicle.

Both Ransom and Pitti died at the scene.

Pitti was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

There were no passengers in either of the vehicles.

It is unclear why Pitti crossed the center line but troopers are still investigating.

The road was closed in both directions following the incident but has since been reopened.
