CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A fox that bit a 3-year-old boy south of Newton last week has tested positive for rabies, WSOC reported.

The boy was bit last Friday while on a picnic with his family near Maiden.

A man told animal services officers that he and his wife were having a picnic with two of their grandchildren when the fox suddenly ran up and began biting one of the children on both legs.

The fox stopped attacking when family members screamed, but then began circling back toward the family. That’s when he shot and killed the fox.

The animal was sent to the North Carolina Public Health Laboratory in Raleigh, which determined the fox tested positive for rabies.
