Prison inmate in Salisbury hangs himself

SALISBURY, N.C. — Authorities said an inmate at Piedmont Correctional Institution apparently hung himself to death early Friday morning.

Salisbury police are investigating the death of 44-year-old Kevin A. Barrett.

Barrett had returned to prison on Oct. 9 after violating his post-release supervision, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.

Barrett was charged in connection to a robbery in connection with a robbery at a Wilco convenience store Aug. 28 in Greensboro.

His charges included armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Barrett was released on March 30 from prison and began his post-release supervision after serving 13 years as a habitual felon.
