HIGH POINT, N.C. — A man was found armed in a car leading to a standoff and finally his arrest, according to High Point police.
At about 5:43 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a report of a PT Cruiser stopped in the intersection of Westchester Drive and English Road.
Patrick A. Riley, 29, of Trinity, was found slumped over the steering wheel with the doors locked and the car running.
Officers tried to wake him up, but when he awoke, he allegedly started yelling and demanding that the officers shoot him.
The officers saw that Riley had a handgun in his lap and backed away.
Police observed for three hours, during which time the man never appeared to fully wake up.
Whenever Riley appeared to wake up, officers would try to speak to him and ask him to get out of the car, but he would again fall asleep.
After about three hours, the High Point Police Department Tactical Team used tear gas to force him out.
Riley was arrested and went through a medical check.
He is set to undergo further evaluation due to comments he made to officers. After that evaluation, Riley will be charged with assault by pointing a gun, possession of drug paraphernalia, and delaying and obstructing. He also had a order for arrest for failing to appear on a charge of injury to personal property.
