WILMINGTON, N.C. — Beware of rip currents.

Authorities say more than 90 people were rescued on North and South Carolina beaches Thursday due to rough water and rip currents.

Capt. Jeremy Owens with Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue said 29 water rescues were made on Wrightsville Beach while Carolina Beach reported 15 rescues and Myrtle Beach more than 50, WECT reports.

If caught in a rip current, the National Weather Service suggests that you remain calm, yell for help, stay afloat and do not swim against a rip current.

Keeping tabs with the closest lifeguard can also ensure optimal safety.
