‘Pokemon Go’ a valuable marketing tool for local businesses

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- If you're not playing "Pokemon Go," you probably at least know someone who is.

"I was hooked on it then and I am kind of back to square one again, hooked on it again," said Any Dietze, of Trek of Greensboro, who played the original game when he was a kid.

Dietze and the other guys at Trek can't catch enough of the game. "We'll go out and ride our bikes on the Greenway at lunch and sort of play the game and that's sort of the similar activity for some of our customers," Dietze said.

That's when SFW, a Triad marketing agency, knew the game could do a lot for local businesses.

"They have 21 million daily users so we were like how can we you know use this trend in any way with our clients and see if we can engage with their customers," said Jessica Holke, SFW production manager.

On Saturday, Trek is hosting what they're calling "Greenway Go" -- a group hunt on bikes for Pokemon along the Greensboro Greenway.

"There's a few different stops you can make along the way to catch Pokemon and do other activities in the game," Dietze explained.

While creative, marketers say many businesses don't need this elaborate of a plan to use the game for exposure. "Just setting up signs and saying you know hey, we've got Pokemon here, come on in, and a lot of places have had 75 percent increase in their business," Holke said.

If you want to take part in the Greenway Go, it's Saturday, July 23. It begins at 10 a.m. at the Trek store in Greensboro at 1209 Battleground Ave. The event is free, but registration is required and can be done on Trek's website.
