PLEASANT GARDEN, N.C. — If you see a huge spout of fire in the sky over Pleasant Garden on Monday, don’t worry.
Piedmont Natural Gas plans to conduct a routine pipeline safety inspection.
The company plans to use a flare stack that makes a loud noise and produces a tall flame.
Officials said the burn off is any excess natural gas used during the inspection process.
The inspection should take about a week. The image above is what it should look like.
Officials explained the inspection in an email to local media on Sunday:
“This is a safe, controlled inspection procedure that involves inserting a mechanical inspection device into the natural gas pipeline. The device is propelled through the pipe by flowing gas and in order to maintain a constant rate of travel through the pipe, it is necessary to “flare” or burn off released gas from the pipe through a “flare stack” that produces a loud and highly visible flame.”
