Piedmont-based app shares workouts with friends

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- George Dimopoulos, 22, has trained with some of the best as a former soccer player at Greensboro College.

But when it came to his fitness routine, at one point, even he hit a rut.

“When I went to the gym on my own I kind of struggled to remember what exercises to do that day," he said.

He says he couldn’t find many options for getting ideas that also had a social aspect to it.

"There wasn't anything that was personable enough for you to actually feel that you could relate to,” Dimopoulos said.

It was during his senior year that he and two others, Michael Esposito and Vasili Dimopoulos, began to develop “The Train App,” which provides a space where people can receive workout ideas while also being a part of a social media community.

"If you like what they post, you can follow them,” Dimopoulos said.

Users can watch or upload eight-second videos that are divided into working six different muscle groups.

The app is geared toward an audience ranging from people who don’t know much about fitness to instructors looking for a platform, and people who have a routine but are interested in something new.

Dimopoulos created the app with the help of Triad Startup Lab and the Growing Entrepreneurs by Mentoring Students program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The Train App became available through the iTunes App Store within the last month.

Currently, there are approximately 500 users.

Most of the users are based in North Carolina, but some are from other states as well.

Dimopoulos’ partners are based in Boston and Charlotte.

The team is reviewing user feedback to consider adding other features and expanding to other app platforms.
