BURLINGTON, N.C. — Police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection with a carjacking in Burlington.
Officers with the Burlington Police Department responded to 1382 N. Church St. at 9:19 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of an armed robbery, according to a release.
The victim told officers that a man had stolen his red 2016 Honda Accord with the New York license plate HGK-1763.
“I was picking up some tacos and someone just came, got in my car, and left,” the victim told the dispatcher in a 911 call. “And held up my girlfriend at gunpoint.”
Officers say a woman was inside the vehicle at the time of the incident and the suspect reportedly pointed a handgun at her, ordering her out of the car.
Asst. Chief of Burlington Police Chris Verdeck said the quality of the surveillance photos makes him optimistic that the suspect will be caught.
“We’ve got a great community here,” he said. “Somebody is going to recognize him and give us a call.”
He added that crimes like this are very rare in Burlington.
“I don’t ever remember us having a true carjacking, armed robbery style incident like this…ever,” Asst. Chief Verdeck said.
The suspect was last seen driving the victim’s vehicle east on North Church Street toward Haw River.
Anyone who knows the identity of the suspect is asked to call the Burlington Police Department at (336) 229-3503 or Burlington/Alamance Crimestoppers at (336) 229-7100.
