(CNN) — The top House Democrat, Nancy Pelosi, welcomed Paul Ryan back to Congress in true partisan style Thursday with a video highlighting Ryan’s vote for a measure enacting automatic spending cuts, known as sequestration, and other heated political topics.
A combative and long-standing Democratic figure in Washington, Pelosi posted the video to her YouTube page as Congress reconvenes from their summer recess and Ryan returns to Washington after being tapped as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s running mate on August 11.
The video begins with the theme music from the sitcom “Welcome back, Kotter” and proceeds to splice together television news clips of Ryan, the House Budget chairman, explaining his vote for the automatic spending cuts known as sequestration, his 2011 House budget proposal as well as he and Romney’s plan for tax reform. Democrats have criticized Ryan and Romney for a budget plan they say favors the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.
Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck responded to the video saying, “President Obama’s friends in Congress clearly have too much time on their hands. With unemployment above 8% for 43 consecutive months, they should spend more energy helping Americans find work than making low-rent web videos.”
Ryan is expected to make an appearance on the House floor Thursday to vote on a bill to keep government funded beyond October 1, the start of the new fiscal year.
