DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. -- A teacher and her child were crossing the the Wallburg Elementary School parking lot Thursday morning when they were hit by a vehicle, according to the Davidson County  Schools.

Deputies responded to the incident at the school at 7:48 a.m.

The victims -- the teacher and her son -- were both knocked to the ground by the impact, a Davidson County Schools official said. They went for a medical evaluation but were not transported by EMS.

The teacher’s husband told FOX8 that his wife and their son are both doing OK and weren't seriously injured. He added they’re still a little shaken up about what happened.

The mother and son did not want to be identified.

The husband said there have been several issues with parents not following rules when dropping their kids off and that what happened to his family is proof.

Alisha Petruzzia, one of many concerned parents, she said the same thing.

“It's sad that it's come to this point that it was two people that go hurt and I hope that they're OK,” Petruzzia said. "There was actually a note sent home two weeks ago saying if you must walk your child in, to park in a spot. Don't just park anywhere and walk them to the door because there's already a few near misses."

Principal Jim Sparks sent the following letter to parents Thursday afternoon:

Dear Parent or Guardian,

As you may have probably heard, there was a car accident in our parking lot this morning. A pedestrian was struck by a car. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries. The safety our students, staff and visitors is our number one priority. In light of today's accident, we are going to make changes to the morning drop off procedures in an effort to make this process safer.

Beginning immediately, we will discontinue the practice of allowing parking and walking students to school. All cars will go through the line. The following exceptions will be made:

  • Teachers and staff.
  • Substitute teachers and volunteers reporting for duty.
  • Parents that have been given an exception due to student disabilities or injury.
  • Students on safety patrol that are wearing his or her vest.
  • Students on broadcast team and library helpers that have their pass.

I appreciate your understanding and your cooperation as we work together to make our parking lot a safer place for everyone. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
