LEXINGTON, Ky. — A pastor at a church in Kentucky has apologized after one of its members dressed in blackface for an event at the church.

A video posted to YouTube on Friday showed the church’s assistant pastor Joseph Pickens dressed in blackface.

“They said, ‘What are you doing with blackface?’ And I really didn’t know what they were talking about to be honest,” said Jeff Fugate, the lead pastor at Clays Mill Road Baptist Church.

Fugate told WLEX he watched Pickens perform in blackface twice last week and he “didn’t have a second thought” until he started receiving emails about it.

“I’m not trying to be ignorant, but I guess I am,” he said.

Fugate said the boxing skit was supposed to teach teens an inspiring lesson and make them laugh. However, he said the church accidentally sent the wrong message.

“I’m not a racist, and I sure am sorry if I’ve offended you or anybody,” Fugate told WLEX.
