WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A former Winston-Salem State University women’s basketball player was killed in a single-car wreck early Wednesday in Winston-Salem.
Police said Vince Sherman Williams Jr., 27, was driving a 2005 Honda Civic north in the 3700 block of Cherry St. when he lost control at the intersection with Reynolds Boulevard and crashed into a telephone pole around 2:30 a.m.
Jillian Rose Charlet, 22, of Brownsboro Road in Winston-Salem, died at the scene of the wreck, police said.
The driver and another passenger, 21-year-old Choloe Claudette Morse, were both taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
Charlet, an accounting major set to graduate in May, last played for the Rams during the 2010-2011 season. She attended New Washington High School in Mabe, Indiana.
This is the 8th traffic-related death in Winston-Salem this year.
