SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Police have charged the parents of the Surry County student who carried a gun onto a school bus in a backpack.

Catherine Louise Moore, 27, and Nicolas Vazques, 34, were each charged with failure to store a firearm to protect a minor.

The juvenile has been referred to juvenile services.

The principal of Cedar Ridge Elementary School received information that the student had a handgun in a backpack.

After investigating, school officials found and confiscated a .22 caliber handgun.

The gun was not loaded and the student did not have bullets.

“With the assistance of Sheriff Graham Atkinson and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, the situation was handled efficiently and appropriately,” the school system said in a news release Thursday.
