ALBEMARLE, N.C. -- One student is in the hospital and another is in custody after a shooting at Albemarle High School early Tuesday morning.

Police responded to the school on Park Ridge Road around 7:40 to find a male student with a gunshot wound to his leg.

WSOC is reporting that the suspected shooter, identified as Jaylen Russell and the victim, Bernard Miller, were in the courtyard when Russell reportedly shot Miller in the leg.

Students and police say a fight between Russell and Miller had started a few days ago and finally erupted into violence Tuesday morning.

Police say Russell dropped the gun and turned himself in to the principal. He was quickly taken into custody by police.

Miller was taken to the hospital where his condition is unknown.

Police and school officials asked parents to gather at North Albemarle Baptist Church at 401 Park Ridge Road.

Classes at Albemarle High School have been canceled for Tuesday.

Students are using the hashtag #PrayersForAlbemarle on Twitter to leave messages for other students at the school.

The school is about 40 miles east of Charlotte and 50 miles south of High Point.
