SALISBURY, N.C. -- There should be fewer frayed nerves for drivers using the old Yadkin River bridge on Interstate 85.

The 57-year-old bridge is set to close for good Wednesday. The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to shift all southbound traffic onto the new northbound I-85 bridge that opened this spring.

Work on the repacement bridge and other projects on I-85 South will continue over much of the next year.

Crews are building the new I-85 South bridge over the river, which is scheduled to be complete in November. Once the new, wider sections of I-85 South that connect to the new bridge are complete next April, NCDOT will move I-85 South traffic onto the new southbound bridge.

The work is part of the I-85 Corridor Improvement Project in Davidson and Rowan counties.
