NEW YORK — A Time Square costumed character accused of groping a teenage girl was released Tuesday because prosecutors were not sure if they arrested the right person.
According to the New York Daily News, a man dressed as the sugar-addicted Sesame Street character was arrested on Monday after allegedly groping a 16-year-old girl’s breast.
The victim told police the offender also put his arms around her and said “I love you, honey.”
Ranulfo Perez, 48, of Passaic, N.J., who works in the area dressed as the character, was taken into custody for the Sunday incident.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute Perez. A law enforcement source told the Daily News the case was dropped due to a problem with identification.
The victim lost sight of the person who allegedly groped her. Because the offender’s face was covered, it is not possible to positively identify them, a law enforcement source said.
