CHASKA, Minn. — An American fan taking in a Ryder Cup practice round Thursday morning showed up some of Europe’s top professionals.
Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan missed a putt on the 6th green six times during practice and, according to the PGA Tour’s Ben Everill, Henrik Stenson brought out a heckler named David Johnson from the gallery who said he could make the putt.
To sweeten the deal, Justin Rose placed a $100 next to the ball.
“Home soil, right?” Johnson said. Seconds later, he sunk the 12-footer to the delight of spectators.
Johnson met with reporters later, according to Golf Magazine, and said, “I razzed them a little bit, and they heard me, which was insane. They brought me out, which is more insane. I haven’t fully realized what just happened, but overall that was a pretty cool experience, I would go ahead and do that again if I could.”
“I closed my eyes, swallowed my puke and hit the putt,” he jokingly told reporters. “It happened to go in.”
