CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — President Barack Obama is returning to North Carolina to talk to college students about getting Congress to extend low interest rates for a federal loan program.

The president will speak at Carmichael Arena early Tuesday afternoon on the campus of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The rate on popular Stafford loans is supposed to double this summer unless the law is extended. The cost of attending UNC-Chapel Hill is relatively low compared to similar schools, but UNC-system students are bracing for tuition rates to soar this fall.

Obama is also supposed to tape an appearance for a late-night talk show while in the Triangle.

The visit could also help Obama’s re-election prospects in a battleground state. The president is expected to travel to Colorado later Tuesday.
