SHALLOTTE, N.C. – A North Carolina woman who won a massive $188 million lottery jackpot earlier this year has given nearly $700,000 to her local church.

WNCN reported that 26-year-old Marie Holmes of Shallotte took a lump sum payment of $127 million from her Powerball win in February.

“The first thing she promised was to tithe – or give a tenth of her winnings to charity,” according to a prepared statement from Ruth Sheehan with the Francis Law Firm, who represents Holmes.

The mother of four had previously worked jobs at Walmart and McDonald’s to provide for her family.

“This is going to make a huge difference for them,” she said in February, referring to her children. “They will be able to go to school and not have to pay for it.”

Holmes made headlines shortly after her big win for being arrested at her Brunswick County home for having a small amount of marijuana.
