Student shot at North Carolina school, 15-year-old arrested, sheriff’s office says

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP/WGHP) — A student has been shot at New Hanover High School, and officials have arrested a 15-year-old suspect who fled the scene, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

NHCSO spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer says the shooting happened at New Hanover High School around midday.

The wounded student was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 15-year-old who was arrested is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, possession of a weapon on school grounds and discharging a weapon on school grounds.

He could be charged as an adult, but the decision has not been made yet.

Officials are working to reunite parents and students.
