‘I have no words for what I’m feeling’; Fire destroys 100-year-old section of Guilford County church

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A fire has damaged a significant portion of a church in Greensboro.

Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department responded to Celia Phelps United Methodist Church on Groometown Road around 3:30 a.m. Friday. Two buildings of the church were on fire when they responded.

The scene was under control in about an hour, and a total of 11 units responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but they don’t believe it’s suspicious. No injuries have been reported.

“I’ve been in church all my life, but I’ve only been saved since I joined this church. And I’m hoping that we can rebuild,” a member of the church, Clifford Hearne, said.

The fire marshal says the area of the church damaged was built in 1920.

They were able to save a lot of things inside the church and within the sanctuary, like the original pews as well as the church’s Bible.
