GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A busy stretch of interstate was closed for hours Friday morning.

Greensboro Police Department said that just before 5 a.m. they got a call about a multi-vehicle crash that closed all westbound lanes of I-40 between Freeman Mill Road and W. Wendover Avenue.

It’s unknown if there were any injuries. Police say that at least one car was on fire but could not confirm any additional details.

Department of Transportation confirmed that the interstate reopened just before 11:30 a.m.

“That’s a long time. So that is kind of shocking for it to be shut down for that long,” said Tremal McAllister, a driver.

Some drivers say while they hope everyone involved is OK, being rerouted because of the closure impacted their commute to work.

“I was 30 minutes late for work. I was using the Waze app to kind of help me guide myself through 40, and it said that there was a big crash there, so I just bypassed it, got on 70 and got on Wendover and got to work,” said Jonathan Sorsenginh, a driver.

Other drivers were concerned they didn’t see alerts about the road closure.
