ERWIN, N.C. — One North Carolina Army veteran was chosen to appear on a set of limited edition postage stamps that will feature Medal of Honor recipients from the Vietnam War.
Gordon Roberts of Erwin was just 19 years old when he single-handedly took out four enemy bunkers that had pinned another unit in, according to WRAL.
Just two years later President Richard Nixon presented him with the Medal of Honor.
“You don’t think of yourself as someone who would be receiving an award like that,” he told WRAL.
The U.S. Postal Service dedicated the new Vietnam War Forever stamps during a ceremony on the National Mall on Memorial Day.
The stamp sheet will feature 48 of the more than 50 living Medal of Honor recipients.
Although the stamps depict living veterans, Roberts told WRAL its important for people to realize the honor is just as much about those who died during the Vietnam War.
