LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina woman is facing child abuse charges after she allegedly got high on heroin and crashed her car into a power pole with her two young children in the back seat.
WCNC reports witnesses saw 25-year-old Candace Coffey shoot up heroin and begin driving with her children in the backseat. Noticing the danger, they followed the woman down the street and called 911 before she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the power pole.
After hearing the noise, several nearby neighbors ran outside to help.
“I went outside and seen people running and screaming,” says Dana Reel.
The neighbors say it was obvious Coffey was high and just wanted to calm the children down.
Coffey’s children, ages 2 and 5, were temporarily taken into the Department of Social Services’ custody.
She appeared in court on Tuesday and is charged with child abuse and driving while impaired.
