ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A North Carolina man who was recently in the news for surrounding his home with Confederate flags is in jail on a probation violation charge.

The Smoking Gun reported that Edward Lee West, 69, of Rocky Mount, is currently in the Nash County Jail after being jailed Wednesday.

West allegedly failed to appear at a probation hearing last week and a judge issued an arrest warrant for him. Details about his alleged probation violation remain unclear.

West had reportedly been serving two years of probation for a misdemeanor conviction of “assault pointing gun.” He has an Aug. 5 court appearance.

West lives in a predominately black neighborhood in Rocky Mount and surrounded his home with Confederate flags last month, according to WITN.

His neighbors told WITN he’s flown a Confederate flag in his yard for years, but more flags went up after the killings at a historic black church in Charleston. He reportedly has 150 in his yard.

West said to him the Confederate flag means, “I got my own property and nobody can tell me what to do with it.”

The flags cover West’s front and backyard, which are surrounded by “no trespassing” signs and barbed wire.

Some neighbors told WITN they don’t mind West flying the flags, but others see them as a sign of hate.

The flags are legal and there are no codes regarding flying them on private property, according to city officials.
