OAK ISLAND, N.C. – A man proposed to his girlfriend on a dock off the coast of North Carolina, but the ring fell into the water.

WECT reported that Matthew Picca recently got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend Kayla Harrity.

It happened as the couple was eating dinner in Southport and Picca took her out onto the dock.

“When I opened the box, the ring wasn’t seated correctly, and fell out onto the deck and fell through the cracks into the water,” said Picca, a Monroe, N.C. resident.

The couple both said they were in shock after the ring fell into the water. The couple’s family and several strangers helped them try to find it.

After about two hours of searching in the water, the ring was found.

“It was the best feeling in the world,” girlfriend Harrity told WECT. “My fiancé, soaking wet, smelling like salty, fishing water, proceeded to get down on one knee and put the beautiful ring on my finger!”

Harrity said yes and the couple is now planning the wedding.

“Without your help, we would not be standing here right now planning our wedding,” Harrity said, referring to all the strangers that helped him find the ring.
