YANCEY COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina man has died after authorities said the model airplane he was working on caught fire and his camper went up in flames.

WLOS-TV reported that 50-year-old Jackie Robinson suffered burns to 90 percent of his body and died Friday after being taken to the hospital.

It happened inside his camper on Highway 19 in Yancey County, according to authorities.

A man driving by the store said he saw smoke coming from Robinson’s camper and stopped to help. The driver he had to use a shovel to pry open the front door.

Robinson was airlifted to Mission Hospital and then flown to the Burn Unit in Winston Salem, according to officials.
