CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Police are investigating a North Carolina day care after a worker allegedly left a toddler in a van for hours during hot weather.

Chapel Hill mother Kimberly Cates told WNCN that she filed a police report against the day care after administrators begged her not to go to police.

The mother said day care administrators showed up at her front door with the child and informed her the child was left on the bus most of the day.

“It breaks my heart because I didn’t know and I couldn’t do anything,” the mother said. “My baby was suffering and I couldn’t do anything because I didn’t know.”

The mother said her daughter was left in the van from about 8:45 a.m. to about 3 p.m. with temperatures hitting nearly 100 degrees.

The young girl was described as dehydrated, but is in good condition. Police in Chapel Hill are investigating.

The day care, Operation New Life Child Development Center, released a statement through its attorney, which read in part:

“The individual responsible for this incident failed to perform her duties and avoided several safety checks built into company policies to ensure the safety of the children.”
