WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — It’s hard to miss the row of eyesores on Cameron Avenue in Winston-Salem.  The five brick homes have boarded up windows, rotting wood and overgrown lawns.

However,  instead of seeing despair, The Reverend Barry Washington with Whole Man Ministries of North Carolina sees hope.

“It’s going to be a lot of work to fix them, but I also see character,” Washington said.

Whole Man Ministries launched Homes for Our Heroes, an effort to provide permanent housing for homeless veterans.

Washington said through his work he met too many homeless veterans and that is unacceptable.

“I’m living these civil liberties and enjoying these freedoms and knowing they have served and to see them falling, It just pulled at my heart,” Washington said.
