KING, N.C. – Poinsettias are in bloom at Mitchell’s Nursery and Greenhouse.
“This year we’ve got a little over 9,000,” said Jim Mitchell who, along with his wife Judy, have been growing the Christmas favorite for 20 years. “We’ve got 80 different varieties.”
The couple is only one of two test sites in the state for future breeds of poinsettias. While they offer many different shades of the traditional red, they also offer a number of variations of pink and white including some new colors breeders hope will become popular at Thanksgiving.
“The Gold Rush is one they are promoting for more of a Thanksgiving poinsettia,” said Judy Mitchell. “It goes better with your Thanksgiving decorations than the reds.”
New breeds such as Love you pink, soft pink and hot pink are ones that breeders think might take off year round especially for Easter or Mother’s Day.
The Mitchell family will hold a tour of the poinsettias this Saturday at 11 a.m. During their Open House on December 4th, the public can vote on trial breeds that, if they become popular, could be on the market as soon as next year.
