RALEIGH, N.C. — A new group able to raise and spend unlimited money is organizing to boost the conservative incumbent on the North Carolina Supreme Court in the court’s only election this year.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that election could change the balance on the seven-member Supreme Court, which currently tips conservative.

Key conservatives have formed the North Carolina Judicial Coalition to help Justice Paul Newby against Democratic challenger Sam Ervin IV, now a judge on the state Court of Appeals.

While all of the Supreme Court’s business is important, the election comes at a time that a series of lawsuits against laws passed by the Republican-led General Assembly could end up before the justices.

The cases involve contentious issues as redistricting, abortion and education funding.
