LELAND, N.C. – A new Department of Transportation highway sign in North Carolina has been misspelled.
WWAY reported that the sign at the 17/74/76 split in Leland misspells the Columbus County city of Whiteville as “Whitevllie.”
The state DOT said they are aware of the problem and are working on fixing it.
“They are made by the prison system,” said a DOT spokesperson. “Unfortunately, we contract out a lot of our design and inspection and we don’t always have local people inspecting the signs.”
It remains uncertain how long it will take to fix the error. Officials said the error will not cost the DOT or taxpayers any money.
