LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A 75-year-old woman was out organizing help to keep people in their homes when a fire damaged her own Lincoln County house Monday morning.

Ethelene Leatherman held a yard sale to raise money to help people who can’t pay power bills. She was out getting names of people to help when the fire started.

A man who lives two doors down heard glass shatter as pressure from the fire blew out a window in the house on Keever Dairy Road.

The neighbor ran over, called 911 and then grabbed a hose and started spraying down the house. Firefighters told Channel 9 his efforts were able to save more than half of the house.
