CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A North Carolina teenager is recovering in the hospital after lighting a firework in a moving vehicle and having it land on his feet.

WNCN reported that Evan Thomas is recovering at Jaycee Burn Center at UNC in Chapel Hill after the accident on the Fourth of July.

Thomas apparently lit the firework in a moving vehicle and tried throwing it out the window, but it bounced back inside and landed on his feet.

He received third-degree burns to the bottom half of both his legs and first-degree burns on his hands, according to the TV station. No one else in the vehicle was injured.

Thomas told WNCN that he’s lucky to be alive. He said it was like being stabbed.

The teenager will likely be in the hospital for another week, according to the TV station. Doctors at that hospital have reportedly seen eight patients in the past week for firework-related burns.
