TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina middle school teacher was recently disciplined for showing students a music video that supports same-sex marriage.

The Taylorsville Times reported that an unnamed teacher at West Alexander Middle School was disciplined last week for showing a class the video for Macklemore’s “Same Love.”

School officials deemed the video “inappropriate” and “outside the bounds of the curriculum,” but did not comment further. The teacher is reportedly back at school this week.

Authorities have not commented on specific details such as how the teacher was disciplined, why the video was shown, what class was being taught or how old the students were.

Macklemore said the song was written in support of a Washington state’s referendum that was approved in 2012 and legalized same-sex marriage in the state.

The video features a gay couple and a title card at the end that says, “Support Marriage Equality. Approve Ref. 74.”

It won the 2013 MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip Hop Video and features musician Mary Lambert.
