RALEIGH, N.C. — It appears time is running out this year for a House bill to legalize and tax video sweepstakes operations in North Carolina.
The House Finance Committee scheduled a meeting Tuesday to discuss a bill establishing state privilege taxes on sweepstakes establishments.
But committee chairwoman Julia Howard says the bill will not come up for a vote, and she anticipates the meeting will be the panel’s last before the legislative session ends in the coming days.
The committee debated the bill briefly last Thursday. Howard said a new version of the bill will be released Tuesday.
The measure is designed to regulate an industry that lawmakers have had a hard time eliminating. The stat Court of Appeals in March struck down the Legislature’s ban on the games.
