Wrightsville Beach is one of the 20 best surf towns in the world, according to a recent article in National Geographic.

“The whole family can enjoy Wrightsville’s trademark mix of sleepy southern beach town and growing metropolis,” the article reads. “Think catfish with caviar or barbecue with Beaujolais.”

The magazine named the New Hanover County town among the best in the world along with beaches in Hawaii, Brazil, California and Bali.

The magazine staff said it made its selections for the list based on both having the best waves and being inviting for locals and visitors.

“You can just show up and surf, which is something that you can’t always do in big surf towns, such as Huntington Beach, or even some towns on the East Coast,” said Mike Barden, owner of Surf City Surf Shop, according to the magazine.

Wrightsville Beach is just east of Wilmington and is part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
