GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina pastor was killed after his garbage truck collided with a train Monday afternoon.

The crash derailed the train and ripped the front of the truck off, causing it to burst into flames, WSOC reports.

“We heard the big old ‘boom’ and then walked down there and saw it blow up,” said nearby resident Brandi Moses, according to WSOC.

Thomas Collins Jr., the driver of the truck, died in the collision.

Collins Jr. was the pastor of New Canaan Baptist Church in Gastonia and the father of four children.

The reason for the accident has not been released and the investigation is ongoing.
