RALEIGH, N.C. — The head of North Carolina’s mental health division has been killed after his bicycle collided with a tractor trailer in Raleigh.
Police say 49-year-old Steven Jordan was riding his bike in the right lane of U.S. 401 around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday when he was hit by the truck. Jordan died at the scene.
He was the director of the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services for the Department of Health and Human Services.
Jordan had been at the agency since 2010.
Troopers say the truck driver, 28-year-old Clifton Ellis Jr., said he tried to pass Jordan, but traffic kept him from getting in the center lane. Ellis was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
