NEWTON, N.C. — A Catawba County man has pleaded guilty to killing his roommate last year.

The Hickory Daily Record reported that 20-year-old Michael Anderson pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder with aggravating factors.

Prosecutors say Anderson shot and killed 36-year-old Stephen Starr as he slept on Valentine’s Day last year. Police say Anderson then used a knife and ax to stab and mutilate his body.

Police say Anderson called 911 to report he had killed his roommate. Anderson said he had overdosed on cold medicine.

Superior Court Judge James Morgan sentenced Anderson to between 16 and 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Starr and Anderson met shortly before the killing, with Starr taking Anderson into his home.
