CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man convicted of killing his 23-month-old son was sentenced Tuesday morning to life in prison without parole.

WSOC reported that the jury in the trial of 27-year-old Andre Earl Hampton had been deliberating on his sentence since last week.

Hampton was found guilty of first-degree murder about two weeks ago. Prosecutors said he beat his 23-month-old son to death in 2008.

Hampton was convicted of first-degree murder and felony child abuse. He confessed to beating Ellijah Burger with a toothbrush, a hairbrush and a belt, saying his son wouldn’t eat his soup.

Jurors had to decide whether to sentence Hampton to life in prison or the death penalty.
