IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. – An Iredell County caregiver has been charged after officials said a child in her care shot himself in the leg.

WCNC-TV reported that 66-year-old Brenda Moore Rucker was charged with failing to store a firearm to protect minors and child abuse.

Deputies said the suspect was sleeping when a 9-year-old boy grabbed the pistol from a cabinet and accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Officials said it happened at a Troutman home around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Authorities said the .357 revolver belonged to the suspect and she kept it in a cabinet.

Rucker said she didn’t know anyone else knew where the pistol was. Officials said the child will be okay.

The suspect was jailed under a $30,000 secured bond. She has court planned for Aug. 18.
